The Secrets of Harnessing the Power of the Dark Moon
The lunar cycle is all too often reduced to only new moons and full moons, but it is much more than that - there are actually eight phases of the moon. When only the new moons and full moons are focused on, we miss the magic of the rest of the lunar cycle.
My blog article, Consciously Creating Using Lunar Cycles, goes beyond just new and full moons, detailing the eight moon phases and how to work consciously with the lunar cycle as a whole. Here, I will share specifically the secrets of the dark moon. While the new moon is a fresh new start each month, the dark moon, the three days preceding the new moon, often goes by unnoticed. Yet the dark moon, the deepest point of the lunar cycle when we are given the opportunity to rest, release, restore and regenerate, holds the secret to new moon magic.
When working with the dark moon, also known as the balsamic moon, the key words are soothing and restorative.
This time of the waning moon just before the new moon is the deepest part of the lunar cycle. It is the time when there is no sun light being reflected by the moon. In astrology we know the sun as the light of consciousness and the moon as the subconscious. This means that during the dark moon we have access to our innermost depths, and the pull is to turn inward. During the dark moon, the moon is still waning from full to new - it is actually in the final stages of waning before beginning the cycle again. When the moon is waning, it is a time of release. The full moon has brought a realization, illumination or culmination after which we have the time when it is waning to new again to release or eliminate what is no longer needed before the next new beginning. The dark moon is when we cocoon ourselves away from the stressors and overwhelm of the world and rest, nourish, hydrate, restore and repair. It is the time given to us in the natural cycle each month to regenerate and prepare to begin again with the coming new moon. It is our respite, our retreat of quiet and solace dictated by mother nature herself. When we tune into the earth and natural cycles around us, when we listen, when we align, we find hidden magic and receive unexpected blessings. |
Hi, I'm Kasey....
Yes, those are elephant tattoos on my back. Why elephants? Here's my story. Check out "Elephant Spirit Guides and the Process of Becoming Free" on the blog.
(In fact, in 2017, I finally was able to visit the elephant sanctuary in Thailand to walk with them in person - that's where I met Pookie and also learned the legend of Queen Suriyothai.) The elephants were part of my "awakening." By the time I made it to Thailand five years later, I was deep into my descent, and it would still be many more months before I began my return. We begin things at the new moon through the waxing crescent moon. (At least things we are interested in growing.)
The dark moon then could be seen as a time of endings. Use the dark moon to initiate tasks having to do with eliminating or lessening things. The dark moon is a time in which intuition reigns. This is not a time to expect to feel high energy, social or action-oriented. Anything that feels restful and restorative will be pure magic on the dark moon, and will be more powerful during a dark moon than any other time of the month. Also potent is anything that clears out or tunes out. Taking a break from social media, news, television, phone calls and emails helps rest an overstimulated mind and psyche. Sorting, eliminating and reorganizing clothes and household items in the physical realm can facilitate the same in the subconscious and mind. Dark moons are a time to be - the more still we can be during the dark moon, the more quiet we can become, the more we allow emotions or residue from deep within to bubble up for release. Anything involving nurturing or nourishing is golden, as is journaling, meditating, or solitary low-key activities like walking in nature. If the dark moon is while the moon is transiting a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces), salt baths, hot springs or anything near or in water will be especially healing. If it is transiting an earth sign, gardening or getting out for a hike could work wonders. If the moon is in a fire sign during the dark moon, maybe writing down what you are banishing and offering it to the flames is what is necessary. Lastly, as dark moons are times of restoration and regeneration, these are times to protect our energy. This is a time to keep up energetic and spiritual protection. Remember that substances such as alcohol are spirits that can come with spirits. The dark moon is a time when it is very appropriate to use our "no" and not spread ourselves too thin. Be mindful of those people and situations in your life that you know take more of your time and energy, and do your best to stay out of stressful situations. The dark moon is only three days - if La Luna can power down, we can take advantage of this respite as well. By tuning in and working with the dark moon, we are doing the inner work that allows us to arrive at the new moon, at the start of the next lunar cycle, clear-headed and fresh, which makes our new moon magic all the more powerful. Start a practice of honoring the dark moon - map out your own personal dark moon protocol and apply it every month and see what magic awaits! Dark Moon Blessings, Kasey |
